HICKS, Evelyn - Passed away peacefully on Friday, November 5, 2021 at home surrounded by her family. Evelyn began her fight against melanoma in 2019, maintaining her grace, optimism and strong spirit till the end. She would often say "I’ve lived a long, healthy life. I have so much to be grateful for.” Evelyn (also fondly known as Evy, Mom, Grandma and Nana), was born in 1934 to Elof and Alma Christianson in Hearst, Ontario. From the time she was a child, Evelyn learned the importance of hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit from her parents, who grew several businesses including a trucking company, a series of logging camps in the bush in northern Ontario and a sawmill.
Evelyn's family lived on her grandparents’ farm on the outskirts of Mattice, Ontario; but running the family businesses often took her parents away from home. Growing up on the farm, Evelyn and her siblings were always busy with chores when not in school. Of note, they fetched water for the farm animals from the Missinaibi River – a responsibility that continued even during the winter months, when the water had to be retrieved through holes in the ice.
Evelyn's childhood made her fiercely independent, a trait which continued to the very end of her life. This sense of independence was evident as early as grade 11 when she moved away from her family to attend high school in Kapuskasing, Ontario. During these last two years of high school, she boarded with a local family, performing domestic duties to earn her room and board.
After completing high school, Evelyn attended a six-week teacher training course in Toronto before starting work as a teacher in a one room schoolhouse in the Monteith, Ontario area. It was during these two years teaching that she met her future husband Albert Hicks.
After Evelyn married Albert in 1954, her family became the centre of her life. Albert and Evelyn were blessed with 5 children: Dennis, a baby girl who died shortly after birth, Michael, Katherine and Ralph. As spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren joined the family, she cherished her time with them too. And her love and devotion to her husband Albert endured through 62 years of marriage. Evelyn thought constantly of her family and always wanted them to feel special.
After the last of her children were born, Evelyn went back to work; first as a substitute teacher in Omemee, Ontario and then at the girls training school in Lindsay, Ontario. She then made a major career change when she and Albert bought and operated the South Winds Motel in London, Ontario.
After Albert and Evelyn sold the motel, she became a tour director for DeNure Tours where she loved meeting new people and making the guests happy. In her 20+ years as a tour director, Evelyn visited every province in Canada and every state in the US other than Hawaii. During this time, she developed a particular affinity for Newfoundland and its people.
Evelyn loved to travel. Besides travelling for work, she took numerous personal trips to various destinations, including Hawaii, Europe and the Caribbean. She loved an eclectic variety of music, particularly waltzes, East Coast and Celtic traditional music and choral music. She also loved to garden and spend time at her cottage.
Evelyn will be greatly missed by her surviving children Michael, Katherine (Ron) and Ralph; her grandchildren Chelsea (Warren), Jeffrey (Zuza) and Eric (Michelle); and her great-grandchildren Cadence, Dylan, Mason, Lincoln and Tyler. She will be joyfully greeted in heaven by her late husband Albert, eldest son Dennis and her first daughter.
Evelyn was a beloved sister to Gladys, Margaret (Wilfred), Dorothy (Fred), Marian (the late Rolly), Edward, George and the late Jack (Cecile), Thelma and Don (Denise). She was also a dear sister-in-law to Freda (the late Basil), Whitfield (the late Elva), Elsie (Gordon), Lester (Patricia) and the late Flora (the late William) and Leta (the late Elton). Aunt Evelyn will also be remembered fondly by her many nieces, nephews and their extended families.
Visitation will be held on November 20, 2021 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception. All events will be held at Celebrations (The Old Queen Street Church), 35 Lindsay Street North, Lindsay, Ontario.

MACKENZIE, Joan Mary - Peacefully, in her 102nd year, on Wednesday, August 19th, 2020, our beloved Mum, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, Joan Mary MacKenzie (nee Francis) was called home by her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Joan was predeceased by her loving husband Don in 1994, her parents John & Elizabeth Francis and her dearly loved siblings; sister, Dorothy “Dorrie”, and brothers John “Jack”, Don, Robert “Bob”, and Gordon “Dick”, as well as many extended family members and friends. We are greatly comforted knowing that they are now reunited in Heaven.
Joan is survived by her three daughters and their families: Mary (Ian) Wilton, Laurie (Les) MacNeill, and Sarah (Don) Warrener. Her beloved grandchildren: Stuart, Heather (Wayne), Scott (Carol), Kevin (Monica), and Melissa (Eddie) and her treasured great-grandchildren, Kyra, Cole, Nate, Jude, Hailey, Stevie, Evie, and Lucas. As well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members in Canada and overseas.
Joan was born in the town of Guildford, Surrey, England on August 21st, 1918 and spent her childhood growing up in Leigh-on-Sea/Southend on the Thames estuary. Joan graduated from “Southend High School for Girls”, excelling in the arts. This was followed by very formative years studying to obtain her fine arts degree from St. Martin’s School of Art London, England.
During World War II, Joan met a handsome Canadian soldier, Donald “Don” MacKenzie from Wallaceburg, Ontario. Joan and Don were married in All Saints Anglican Church, Witley, Surrey in June 1944.
Joan’s artistic gifts were a source of great joy and passion throughout her life. Both to her, and to those whose lives she touched through her art. Chalmers Presbyterian Church (London) has been Joan’s spiritual home for the past 30 + years.
Given the current pandemic situation, we were so grateful that following a brief hospital stay, Joan was given palliative care placement at the Parkwood Institute. This allowed for Mum to have visits with her daughters Mary and Laurie. Truly a gift at the time of Joan’s passing was that her grand-daughter Heather was able to visit that day and was reading aloud from one of Joan’s favourite novels, “All Creatures Great & Small” by James Herriot. Joan passed into the arms of her loving Saviour very peacefully in the early evening hours.
We are so thankful for the compassionate care given to Joan by the staff of Ashwood Manor, Victoria Hospital and Parkwood Institute Palliative Care. A private family Memorial Service will take place at a later date with John Bannerman of Chalmers Presbyterian Church officiating.

SMEDLEY, Dennis - 88, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at Victoria Hospital, in London, Ontario. Dennis was born March 24, 1932 to James and Florence (Kidd) Smedley in Manchester, England, the youngest of three children.
While evacuated to a small town 75 km south of Manchester during WWII, he lost his father suddenly; however, the childhood memories of the years spent in this village were nothing short of happiness and pure joy. He later served two years in the British Army, spending time in Egypt, Eritrea, Jordan and Sudan. In April 1956, he immigrated to Canada and made London his forever home. It was here that he met his cherished wife, Elizabeth (McGregor). A devoted husband of 56 years, loving father and grandfather, his commitment to family and lifelong friendships should be an example to all. He touched so many people throughout the years with his kindness, generosity, and gift of time to several charitable causes, including two decades volunteering at the London Food Bank. In 1968, Dennis began his long-standing career with the LCBO, retiring in June 1992. Perhaps this is where he developed a passion for a nice rum and 7-Up from time-to-time, but it was his quest for trying new beer with willing participants that he enjoyed most in recent years. Dennis is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Susan Smedley (Juan Manuel Cordeiro Rodriguez) and Karen van Hunnik (Michael); grandchildren, Jordan and Kaia van Hunnik, and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, the USA and UK. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Josie Smedley. Dennis was predeceased by his parents, sister Florence Hampson, brother James Smedley and his brother-in-law Gordon Hampson.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chalmers Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice, as he supported so many wonderful causes over the years.
Arrangements entrusted with A. MILLARD GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, 519-433-5184. Online condolences, memories and photographs shared at www.amgfh.com

Gaskin, Maureen , 86, passed April 13, 2020, with her family by her side at the Kensington Long Term Care Home in London, Ontario. Maureen was born in Scotland to Alexander and Elizabeth Low and was raised as an Aberdeen Quine. Maureen met and married Johnny Gaskin in Scotland where they raised their family. In 1966 they immigrated to Canada, where she later became a proud Canadian Citizen. Maureen was a beloved friend and relative to many, both in Canada and in Scotland. Family meant both in Canada and in Scotland. Family meant everything to Maureen, her greatest pleasures were caring for and feeding her loved ones. Her recipes (soup maker extraordinaire) will live on forever through her family. For many years she was an active member of Chalmers Presbyterian Church, and also enjoyed her swimming group with her friends. Maureen was a fighter to the end as in the past few years she had survived cancer, a broken hip and shingles. Tiny but mighty! Maureen was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. Maureen (Ma, Granny, Great-Granny) will be sadly missed by her children Ken (Deb), John, Teresa (Corey) and David (Melanie); and her grandchildren, Fiona (Christian), Caitlin (Mason), Robyn (Aaron), Jaime (Sandy), Andrew, Heather (Kelsy), Emily, Justine and Jillian; and her great grandchildren, Blake & Reid Guy and Charlie, Macy & Beckett Driscoll. Maureen was a treasured sister to Alistair (Stella), Pat (Charlie), Charles (June) & Edwin (Mildred). Maureen was predeceased by her husband Johnny, brother William, sister Sylvia and daughter-in-law Cindy (John). Many thanks to the staff at Kensington Long Term Care Home for their dedication and compassion in these uncertain times. A celebration of life will be held at a future date when our world becomes safe to have gatherings. A private interment will also occur at a future date when Maureen will be placed in the family niche with her husband John. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

DOSKAS, John - Passed away Wednesday March 23, 2016, after a brief stay at Victoria Hospital, London, with loved ones by his side at 85 years of age. John is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Doris, his two sons, Trevor (Julie) and Warren Tyson, his daughter, Karen James (Doug), and his six grandchildren, Adam, Michelle, Mark and Nicole Tyson, Alyssa Tyson, and Ethan James. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Teresa and Barbara Doskas, three brothers, Rene, Jim (Ileen) and Tom Doskas, and two brothers-in-law, Doug (Ann) and Ken Godlington. John had been in treatment for cancer that had returned after ten years in remission. Complications from a serious infection proved too much for his system. John was born on March 31, 1930 in Montreal, Quebec. He was one of six children born to James and Riene Doskas. John had a love and ingenious skill for tinkering, forever fixing or improving or inventing conveniences in the workplace and around the home. His laughter was always infectious. His humour was often mischievous. Delighting in making people laugh, he brought a playful spirit to almost everywhere he went. It was clear from his own hardy laugh that he loved to laugh, himself. If John was in the house, everyone knew it. A constant chorus of joyful tunes and made-up melodies accompanied him nearly every place he went, and in almost any project he engaged in. Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be planned in celebration of his life this spring or early summer. Expressions of sympathy and donations (Canadian Cancer Society) would be appreciated and may be made through LONDON CREMATION SERVICES (519) 672-0459 or online at www.londoncremation.com
